Renewal of Site Safety Training (SST) Cards Requires Refresher Training

RENEW YOUR SST CARD HERE

Workers and supervisors in the construction industry must be aware of an important requirement for renewing their Site Safety Training (SST) cards. In order to renew your SST card you are required to complete refresher training. The NYC DOB has recently made revisions to the required training.

Refresher training for workers

For workers seeking to renew their SST cards, completion of eight hours of refresher training is mandatory. There are two options available for workers to choose from:

  • 4-Hour Fall Prevention
  • 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User & Refresher

OR

  • 4-Hour Fall Prevention
  • 2-Hour Toolbox Talks
  • 2-Hour Pre-Task Safety Meeting

The first program focuses on fall prevention and provides a comprehensive overview of the principles and strategies necessary to mitigate fall-related hazards on worksites. The second program includes a combination of fall prevention training, toolbox talks, and pre-task safety meetings, which enhance workers' knowledge and awareness of potential risks and safe practices.

Refresher training for Supervisors

Supervisors, on the other hand, are required to complete sixteen hours of refresher training to renew their SST cards. They can choose from the following options:

  • 8-Hour Fall Prevention
  • 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User & Refresher
  • 2-Hour 'Tool Box Talks
  • 2-Hour Pre-Task Safety Meeting

OR

  • 8-Hour Fall Prevention
  • 8-Hour Site Safety Manager Refresher/Chapter 33

OR

  • 8-Hour Site Safety Manager Refresher/Chapter 33
  • 4-Hour Fall Prevention
  • 2-Hour 'Tool Box Talks
  • 2-Hour Pre-Task Safety Meeting

These programs provide supervisors with a comprehensive understanding of safety management, including fall prevention, scaffold usage, toolbox talks, and pre-task safety meetings. The options cater to supervisors' responsibilities, allowing them to choose a training program that aligns with their specific roles and requirements.

It is essential for workers and supervisors to proactively plan their refresher training to meet the renewal deadline for their SST cards. Waiting until the last minute can lead to delays in card renewal and potential disruptions to ongoing projects or employment. Therefore, it is advisable to schedule refresher training well in advance of the card renewal application.

In conclusion, the expiration of Site Safety Training (SST) cards in 2023 necessitates completion of refresher training courses for workers and supervisors. These training programs, designed to update knowledge and reinforce safety protocols, play a crucial role in ensuring a safe work environment. By adhering to these requirements, workers and supervisors demonstrate their commitment to workplace safety, protecting both themselves and their colleagues from potential hazards.
